Cheshire economy to benefit from major transport funding. 

Work on the Crewe Green Link Road can start following government agreement to fund the scheme.

The Department for Transport will fund up to £15.6 million of the £26.4 million scheme which will provide vital transport links to Basford, an important site for local employment opportunities. The scheme will also include a new bypass to the south east of Crewe. This will ease congestion in the town and bring major environmental benefits by reducing traffic queues with fewer trucks trying to negotiate town centre streets.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said:

This scheme is great news for Crewe and will support the economic growth and regeneration of the town, including the ‘All Change for Crewe’ strategy.

The £15.6 million we are putting into this project shows that the we are serious about investing in the infrastructure the country needs to drive economic growth, both locally and nationally.

The scheme consists of a 1.1 km long dual carriageway road from the existing bypass on the A500 to the A5020 passing under the Crewe-Stoke Railway.

Today’s (30 May 2014) announcement grants full approval to the scheme, which is promoted by Cheshire East Council, and enables work to begin.

The main works are scheduled to start immediately with completion of the scheme in November 2015.

The department will provide a maximum of £15.64 million towards the full scheme cost of £26.375 million.
