The government has unveiled £191 billion of business opportunities to 2020 and beyond.

Potential opportunities worth around £191 billion to businesses are published today by Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude. The spending picture released today will help businesses across the country plan for and win opportunities on future government projects.

19 UK ‘pipelines’ reveal what government is planning to buy and construct. They show investment in areas from police and fire equipment, to science, technology, and research. Highlights show the government will invest in:

• the development of 2 Proton Beam Therapy centres at University College Hospital London and Christie in Greater Manchester. Proton beam therapy is a type of radiotherapy which results in much less damage to surrounding tissue compared to conventional radiotherapy
• Priority School Building Programme – £2 billion is to be invested in schools in need of repair
• Clinical and Medical Life Sciences – spending has increased by £4 billion since December 2013 to £13 billion on important tools such as MRI scanners and electrocardiographs (ECGs).

Pipelines provide greater transparency about future public sector business, and help suppliers to plan and win more business. They also enable government to secure deals that offer better value for the taxpayer by negotiating early with suppliers.

Francis Maude, Minister for the Cabinet Office, said:

As part of this government’s long term economic plan we are publishing pipelines of future spending to help businesses across the country plan for and win contracts with government. We are providing businesses with exactly what they are asking for – up-to-date information in one central place about future government opportunities. This is helping British businesses to grow and innovate, and providing maximum value for taxpayers.
