£1m regeneration project for Rhyl announced

The Minister for Housing and Regeneration, Carl Sargeant has announced what communities in Rhyl can look forward to thanks to £1 million of Welsh Government regeneration funding.

Rhyl is one of seven areas across Wales to receive funding through the Tackling Poverty regeneration fund, part of the Welsh Government’s Vibrant and Viable Places scheme.  The aim of the funding is to provide a boost to town centres – focusing largely on bringing empty buildings back into use.

The Minister said:

“I’m excited to announce that the £1 million allocation for Rhyl will be spent on the redevelopment of the Queen Street Building – a building which has been empty for over 20 years.

“The upper floors of the town centre building will be redeveloped to become one and two bedroom flats as we continue to support as many of those affected by the UK Government’s bedroom tax as possible.

“The ground floor will become home to shops and businesses, creating new jobs and training opportunities and providing a boost to the vibrancy of Rhyl town centre.”

The project will build on recent Welsh Government regeneration activity in the area, through the recent North Wales Coast Regeneration Programme and the West Rhyl Housing Improvement Project and will be delivered by Denbighshire County Council.

Tom Booty Denbighshire’s Economic and Business Manager, said:

“We are really pleased to have been given this allocation to tackle this long-standing eyesore property and we will be working hard over the coming months to bring it back into full use again.”
