£3.2 million to help Welsh communities most in need

Projects to help stop domestic abuse, boost the health of minority groups through cycling and improve the quality of life for people with epilepsy are sharing nearly £3.2 million from the Big Lottery Fund.  

Some 14 projects across Wales are sharing £3,241,741 awarded through the Big Lottery Fund’s People and Places programme (full list at the end of the release). 

Llanelli Women’s Aid receives £377,389 to help families affected by domestic abuse put in place preventative support and actions to break patterns of domestic abuse. This will include developing social skills to help overcome ongoing problems as well as building confidence and self esteem. 

Victoria Pedicini, director of Llanelli Women’s Aid, said: “We are absolutely delighted to be awarded this grant. It will give us the opportunity to deliver an innovative approach to help families experiencing domestic abuse in our locality. 

“The aim of the ‘Early Family Intervention Programme’ is to increase the safety of, and to offer a wrap-around holistic service to support, the whole family. With the emphasis of the project focusing on prevention, it will put in place preventive support and actions to break the cyclic pattern of domestic abuse and inhibiting abuse from escalating. 

“The project will support families who wish to stay together or help families to separate amicably. We are positive that the success of the project will encourage other similar organisations to work in this pioneering way.” 

Pedal Power gets £311,753 for its Changing Gear project which, through cycling, aims to help minority groups like women from BME communities, older people and people with mental health problems or chronic conditions, improve their health and well being. 

The project will target people living in Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan and Rhondda Cynon Taff.

Development officer Margaret McLaughlin said: "Pedal Power is delighted to be awarded funding for its three year Changing Gear project. This will mean making cycling accessible to even more groups and communities. Given how crucial exercise is to health and wellbeing, it is exciting to have this opportunity to bring about positive change in people’s lives through cycling." 

Epilepsy Wales will spend £273,435 on supporting 1,500 people affected by the condition across Wales. Outreach workers and volunteers will provide information, support and education to individuals and their families as well as working within local communities promoting awareness and better services and opportunities for people with epilepsy.

The project will enable them to feel less isolated and more confident to cope with and manage their condition. Providing training and raising awareness within communities will ensure that the wider networks have increased knowledge to enable them to provide better support and services for people affected by epilepsy.

Operations Manager Fiona Kettell said: “We are delighted to have received the support of the Big Lottery Fund and are confident the project will make a real difference to the lives and wellbeing of individuals and families affected by epilepsy in Wales.”

In Gwynedd, TYB (Tal-y-bont) Community Group gets £34,334 to complete a new playground space and recreational space for children and residents of the village whileBorth Family Centre in Ceredigion will spend £201,033 on providing additional services for expectant and new parents, fathers and families who are isolated as well as carrying out more support work outside the centre. 

Jacqui Hughes, of TYB, said: “Receiving this National Lottery funding means a great deal to the community of Tal-y-bont. It will enable us to complete our new playground development which will be enjoyed by many children over many generations. 

“The children are very excited and can’t wait to see and play in their new playground - it will make a huge difference to our rural community.” 

Highlighting the importance of the People and Places programme, Rona Aldrich, Wales Committee Member for the Big Lottery Fund, said: “Programmes like People and Places are making a difference to the lives of so many people in communities across Wales. 

“It delivers on our promise to use National Lottery funding to regenerate and revitalise communities, tackle disadvantage head on and leave a lasting legacy.”

Disability Can Do Organisation Caerphilly  The project will provide independent advocacy, in-patient advocacy, and a longer term support service for people with disabilities. It will also provide non-instructed advocacy for people with limited or no capacity. 
The grant, over three years, will pay for the salaries and associated costs of an Independent Advocacy Manager, a Citizen Advocacy Manager, an Independent Advocacy Assistant and a Citizen Advocacy Assistant. It will also pay for recruitment costs, running costs, training, monitoring and evaluation, marketing and overhead costs.

 Cardiff – 3 Grants worth £788,628
Pedal Power Cardiff Changing Gear aims to develop and extend the services of Pedal Power, an inclusive cycling centre based in Cardiff. The project will help groups and communities improve their health and wellbeing, and will include women from BME communities, older people, people with mental health issues and people with chronic conditions or impairments. There will be a particular focus on working with people from Communities First Cluster areas in Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and Rhondda Cynon Taf. The grant, over three years, will be used to employ two new staff posts and two ancillary positions, project overheads and a new vehicle to deliver the outreach service.  £311,753
Innovate Trust Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan 
and Rhondda Cynon Taff
The Green Days project will help people with learning disabilities and/or mental health problems to gain skills and confidence that will help them to lead an independent life within the community. The project will be delivered across the counties of Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan and Rhondda Cynon Taff and will include such activities as footpath and site reclamation, litter clearing, removal of invasive plant species, planting and maintenance of wildlife areas, habitat improvement to increase biodiversity, general landscape improvement and recording of wildlife plus the development of nature walks and wildlife gardening. The grant, over three years, will fund four existing posts of Project Manager, two Project Officers, and Project Assistant, rent, utilities, staff/volunteer expenses/training, monitoring and evaluation, marketing, project activities, tools, equipment, protective clothing, camera and overhead costs.  £248,713
Cadwyn Housing Association Ltd Cardiff The project will allow the organisation to establish a community led furniture initiative that will provide good quality, refurbished furniture and goods for vulnerable people and low income families. It will also provide volunteering opportunities for members of the local community and to improve the skills of young vulnerable people through getting them involved in up cycling and renovating household furniture that has been donated from various benefactors. They will work in partnership with The Prince’s Trust, allowing the project to offer work placements and skill taster sessions to young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEETs). The grant, over three years, will fund two part-time posts of Workshop Manager and Delivery Driver, recruitment, project management, staff and volunteer expenses, building costs, training, project marketing, vehicle leasing and running costs, purchase of equipment, materials and other related project costs.  £228,162

Llanelli Women Aid Ltd Carmarthenshire The project will increase the safety of, and to provide a holistic service to engage and support service users to put in place preventative support and actions that will break the cyclic pattern of domestic abuse. The service will ensure that the beneficiaries develop the social skills necessary to overcome their on-going problems and build a more independent and sustainable standard of living and way of life to build their confidence and self-esteem. The project will support the whole family, providing one to one and/or group work with the victim, perpetrator and any children/young people. The three year funding will cover the costs of a full time Project Coordinator, two Mediation Support Officers, a Family Engagement and referral Officer and a Children and Young Persons Family Mediation Officer. It will also cover management costs, computers and office furniture and running costs.  £377,389
Felinfoel Family Centre Carmarthenshire The project will reduce isolation and provide support for two target groups in the Felinfoel and surrounding wards, through the provision of services, which will establish a supportive community. The first group are pregnant women and women with new born babies and the second group are families where the child is entering full time education. This grant, over 3 years, will be used to fund a co-ordinator, a family support/outreach worker, a play development worker, a cook, a dads support worker, rent, training, marketing, publicity, development and outreach, professional and legal fees and activity resources.  £181,761
Betws Family Centre Carmarthenshire The project aims to improve the lives of 100 families in the Betws area of Ammanford. It will do this by increasing parents' knowledge, skills and confidence to provide a healthier lifestyle and more stable environment for their children through improving coping skills, dealing with mental health and wellbeing issues, providing healthy living services and supporting families of disabled children. This grant, over 3 years, will be used to fund a new part-time Senior Family Support Worker, an existing part-time Co-ordinator and an existing part-time Family Support Worker. It will also pay for professional fees, utilities, training, monitoring and evaluation, expenses, sessional staff, and other equipment for the centre.  £178,438

Borth Family Centre Ceredigion The project will extend the opening hours of Borth Family Centre and enable it to provide additional services for expectant and new parents, fathers and families who are particularly isolated as well as outreach work in Talybont and Bow Street. The grant, over three years, will pay for the salaries and associated costs of a Co-ordinator, Family Support Worker and a Play Outreach Worker. It will also cover recruitment, expenses, running project, monitoring, professional, legal fees and equipment.  £201,033
 Gwynedd – 1 Grant worth £34,334
T.Y.B (Tal-y-bont) Community Group Gwynedd The project will enable the community group in Tal-y-Bont in Gwynedd, to complete a new playground facility and recreational space for the children and residents of the village both young and old to enjoy, revitalising the village and helping build a community spirit. The one year grant will pay for purchase and installation of the additional play equipment.  £34,334
Monmouthshire – 1 Grant worth £37,500
Caerwent Playing Fields Association Monmouthshire The project will create a sustainable recreation area by building a multi-purpose trail around the playing fields in Caerwent for walkers, cyclists and runners. It will also include benches, flower beds and outdoor fitness equipment. The project will arrange organised group fitness sessions which will help improve the health of local people and improve community cohesion. This grant, over one year, will be used to fund the capital costs of building of a trail, outdoor fitness equipment, benches, equipment and materials for the flower beds and publicity costs.  £37,500
 Swansea – 1 Grant worth £249,916
Your Voice Advocacy Project Swansea The project will allow the organisation to enhance its advocacy service for parents with learning disabilities in Neath Port Talbot and Swansea. Specific advocacy support will be provided for beneficiaries during child protection, care and legal proceedings. This will be achieved through the employment of two Family Advocates who will provide support for parents with learning disabilities, whilst managing a case load of referrals. The project will also establish peer-to-peer workshops and support groups. The grant, over three years, will fund two full time Family Advocates and contribute towards the funding of the existing posts of Project Manager, Finance Officer and a Development and Admin Office. The funding will also support the cost of expenses, training, marketing, legal fees and project running costs.  £249,916
 Torfaen – 1 Grant worth £103,000
Torfaen County Borough Council Torfaen The project will reinstate a play facility at Cwmbran Park providing eight different pieces of play equipment catering for children of all abilities between the ages of 3 to 11. There will also be benches and picnic tables to encourage greater use of the area as a free, all-day destination for families on low incomes in the area. The grant, over one year, is for purchase of equipment, building works, design costs and a community event.  £103,000
 Wrexham – 1 Grant worth £245,055
 Marchwiel Village Hall Wrexham The project will refurbish the Village Hall and make it more attractive to local residents. This will revitalise and enhance the community by providing a wider range of activities, addressing the issue of isolation and providing a hub for the community, particularly the elderly, people with disabilities and those reliant on public transport. The grant of £245,055, over one year, will be used to cover the capital costs of the refurbishment.  £245,055

Epilepsy Wales Wales wide The project will support 1,500 people affected directly and indirectly by epilepsy across Wales. By increasing support leading to better self management of the condition in the community, people living with epilepsy will feel less isolated and more confident to take charge of their own physical and psychological wellbeing. Increased awareness raising activities and training within the community will also ensure that wider networks have increased knowledge to provide better support and provide more joined-up services for people affected by epilepsy. This grant, over three years, will pay for the salaries of a part-time Project Manager and four part-time Epilepsy Outreach Workers , as well as expenses of project staff and volunteers, organisational overheads and small items of office equipment.
