£500k Lottery boost for community groups

Across Scotland, 73 groups share Lottery funding worth £506,996. Find out where funding has gone in your area.

A food festival promoting healthy eating in Glasgow, a hospitality training programme for young people in West Lothian and upgrading a much used community café in Dumfries and Galloway are among the latest Awards for All Scotland projects sharing in grants today.

An award of £10,000 means that Real Food, Real Folk, will organise the “Let’s Eat Glasgow” food festival on 3rd September which will focus on the benefits of healthy eating   and highlight the quality of local produce on offer.  The free, one day event will be a celebration of the city’s vibrant multi-ethnic food scene and attractions will include a livestock area, pop up market and affordable street food created by some of Glasgow’s top restaurants.

Colin Clydesdale, Chair, said, “We came together to create our not for profit co-operative, Real Folk, because we wanted to be part of the growing movement of chefs across the world who are leaving the comfort of their kitchen to work with grassroots organisations, helping improve access to good food.

“We knew we couldn’t shout about the great food we have in Glasgow and across the West of Scotland without trying to do something to help address the very real food inequality across our town. “Let’s Eat Glasgow” is free to enter and gives everyone access to good food, cooked by great chefs at accessible prices and also access to fantastic local producers.

“All profits raised will go towards our work addressing food inequality across the city and we wouldn’t be able to do it without the help from Awards for All Scotland.”

Young people in West Lothian who want to work in the hospitality industry will be able to get the skills and experience they need thanks to an award of £9,200 to The Larder West Lothian.  The money means will allow the group to expand and develop the range of training opportunities they currently provide to local youngsters aged between 14 and 19 years of age.

Angela Boyd, Manager, said, “This award will really improve the quality and range of training that we provide for young people who are furthest from the job market.

“The new equipment will help us expand the range of training we provide as well as increase our ability to develop our enterprise projects with young people.  The money from Awards for All Scotland provides smaller organisations, like us, with grants that will truly have a very significant impact in the work that we do.”
Based in Dumfries, North West Community Café Ltd provides a place for people in the local community to get together and enjoy the range of affordable meals and snacks on offer.  The café, which is run by a group of volunteers will now be able to buy a range of new kitchen and IT equipment after an award of £9,967.

Jean Nelson, Director, said, “We are absolutely delighted to receive funding from Awards for All Scotland.  This money will allow us to upgrade some of our kitchen equipment, the tables and chairs we use and provide us with an up to date IT system.

“We provide a valuable service within a learning centre for thousands of people in the community who use our café to meet and make new friends and to enjoy the affordable light meals on offer.  We can use this refurbishment as a springboard to reach out to even more people in Dumfries now. The next few months are going to be really exciting and we can’t wait to get started. “

An Awards for All Scotland spokesperson, said: “Today are announcing £506,996 to 73 projects grants that will help communities across the country to set up and develop a wide spectrum of projects run for and by local people. What is clear is the smallest amount of funding can often make the biggest difference to people’s lives. All of these grants are a great way to show the variety of projects that can be funded through Awards for All Scotland for people of all ages.”
