A fairer Scotland

Scottish Government and STUC commit to closer working.

The Scottish Government and STUC have yesterday outlined a shared vision of a wealthier and more equal society for Scotland.

Cabinet Secretary for Fair Work, Skills and Training Roseanna Cunningham and Grahame Smith, General Secretary of the STUC, yesterday initiated a cycle of regular bilateral meetings which will build on the First Minister’s wider commitment to equality.

The Scottish Government and the STUC are already working together – and with employers – to boost participation, prosperity and fairness.

The establishment of a Fair Work Convention later this year will further enhance the way government, employers, trade unions and employees engage constructively to embed progressive workplace practices, boost innovation and productivity.

Ultimately this will deliver successful organisations, sustainable business and economic growth, high-quality jobs and a more equitable society.

Ms Cunningham said yesterday:

“Scotland has had a consistently strong trade union voice dating back decades, something we should be very proud of. I want to see that voice enhanced with the trade union movement continuing to be a key contributor to Scotland’s economic success.

“It is becoming increasingly clear that Scotland is moving away from old-fashioned models and has a distinctive commitment to a new and innovative framework for sustainable economic growth which is based on government, employers and trade unions working together to deliver shared ambitions for prosperity and fairness.

“I look forward to a future where these principles are is embedded in everything that we do.”

Grahame Smith, STUC General Secretary added yesterday:

"The STUC had a very constructive discussion with the Cabinet Secretary today. We will be taking forward our joint work in promoting policies which improve the workplace environment and contribute to economic growth.

"This stands in sharp contrast to the outdated approach from the Government at Westminster, which does not recognise the positive contribution that trade unions bring to society and the importance of fair work in achieving key economic and social objectives.

"The recent announcements on further restrictions on the rights to organise and take industrial action in the public sector, have been condemned by both Scottish Government and the STUC, and today’s meeting with the Cabinet Secretary for Fair Work reinforced the very different approach being taken in Scotland."
