A night to remember at the museum

Museums across the Capital are throwing open their doors after hours during Halloween weekend to celebrate the Museums at Night festival.

London will be hosting a range of late night viewings and events with highlights including a talk on human remains at the Benjamin Franklin House, a Handel by Candle tour of the Handel House Museum, and Ye Olde Tavern Quiz at the Museum of the Order of St John.

Don't miss out on the after dark happenings on Friday 30 October and Saturday 31 October. Here are some of our favourites:

Keeping the spirits in check on Halloween is London Transport Museum with its gin tasting and Friday late evening.

There will be talks, guided tastings and the chance to sample a specially created Gimlet Reloaded cocktail designed by an in-house mixologist at The East London Liquor Company. With eight different gins to try, it could well lead to Mother's ruin!

Visit the Transport Museum website to book for Spirited London. Tickets are £15 and include entry to the Friday Late event - and the new Night Shift exhibition - in the museum galleries.

Nearest Tube: Covent Garden (Piccadilly line).

Explore the art of witchcraft at The National Gallery and discover how powerful spells have unleashed creativity in many famous painters. Artist Lachlan Goudie leads a personal and ghoulish tour of the collection and talks about her father, the Scottish artist Alexander Goudie, who believed he was possessed by a witch.

It prompted him to paint many images of his demon at the head of gruesome tribes of hags, warlocks and resuscitated corpses.

Nearest Tube: Charing Cross (Northern and Bakerloo lines).

Uncover the secrets of banknotes and bullion in a rare out-of-hours visit to the Bank of England Museum.

Get an insight into some of the most intriguing and fascinating objects in its collections and find out how easy it is to check that banknotes are genuine.

Nearest Tube/rail: Bank.

Special Halloween magic is being spirited up at the Brunel Museum with Midnight Apothecary on Saturday night. There will be pumpkins, ravens and fireside cocktails in the roof gardens before descending into the underground chamber where Brunel nearly perished, if you dare!

Nearest Tube: Bermondsey (Jubilee line).
