ART and MONEY: Here’s the change

Making your assets work harder and better was the main theme to come out of ART and MONEY: Here’s the change, a day-long event designed to identify practical solutions to help artists and venues develop.

Organised by Arts at the Old Fire Station and Marmalade, ART and MONEY brought together people from across the South East and East of England on 15 April to discuss three main themes:

  1. Change: How might we better demonstrate the social value of the arts?
  2. Money: How might we build innovation into generating income?
  3. Art: How might we get better at telling our stories?

These were all topics that came out of ART and MONEY: Where’s the change, which took place in April 2015.

Practical solutions

The day included a variety of approaches to help the discussions maintain momentum. These included a world café, which saw the groups’ debate three topics across six tables, and idea bingo, which helped to marry up similar ideas.

Working in groups, attendees then developed these ideas further. As part of this they looked at the ‘situation’, identified the ‘complications’ and then worked out a solution.

The solutions put forward included:

  1. Creating brokers that introduce artists and arts organisations to other sectors, for example business, education and research
  2. Working with business groups to identify how artists and arts organisations can diversify income generation
  3. Establishing a regular monthly meeting up for arts and cultural organisations / artists in Oxford
  4. Improved storytelling to help tell audiences why the arts are important and how they positively impact on people’s lives
  5. A ‘Dragon’s Den’ style programme for the arts
  6. Lobbying policy makers to highlight the value of arts and culture
  7. Resource aggregation focused on sharing information and best practice that others can learn from

Attendees came together around the ideas that interested them most to develop creative interpretations. These were then performed to the wider group and included a cup based puppet show, a stop motion Lego adventure and even mime!

Legacy

The ambition of ART and MONEY: Here’s the change was always to create practical ideas that could then be implemented.

The two most popular ideas from the day were an asset review – looking at how arts organisations can make the most of what they’ve got – and Collision, an event designed to bring together artists and researchers.

It is hoped that many of the ideas that have come out of the day will be taken forward by those attending, particularly the two most popular.
