Almost £11m funding for new NHS equipment

NHS services will receive a £10.96m funding boost, Health and Social Services Minister Mark Drakeford announced yesterday (Mon 16th February).

The capital funding will be invested in a range of new high-tech hospital equipment, including x-ray machines, cameras and ultrasound scanners, IT upgrades and introducing the latest beds for patients.

The capital funding will be shared between four health boards.

  • The £500,000 capital funding for Cwm Taf University Health Board will upgrade ultrasound equipment and improve building facilities.
  • In Powys Teaching Health Board, £435,000 will be invested in upgrading the IT network and providing faster, more efficient computers and laptops for frontline health staff. It will also provide replacement medical and dental equipment and replace vehicles with more fuel-efficient models.
  • In Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board, £5.8m will be invested in new high-tech hospital equipment, including ultrasound scanners, mobile x-ray machines, ECG recorders, operating tables, scopes, monitors and IT software, storage and telecoms.
  • Cardiff and Vale University Health Board will receive £4m of funding to upgrade the IT network at medical sites, including buying new computers and replacing medical equipment, including theatre equipment, ventilators, toxicology equipment, gastroscopes and the latest beds for patients.

The Welsh Government invests more than £200m of capital funding in the Welsh health service every year to buy and replace equipment and maintain NHS estates.

Professor Drakeford said:

“Despite cuts to the overall Welsh budget, we are determined to continue to invest in our NHS to make sure patients have access to the latest technology and our hospitals and medical facilities are maintained to the highest standard.

“This funding will ensure health boards can continue to invest in the latest medical equipment.”
