Appointments to the Advisory Panel to the Welsh Language Commissioner

First Minister, Carwyn Jones, yesterday announced the appointment of two new members to the Advisory Panel to the Welsh Language Commissioner.

The newly appointed members, Carl Cooper and Bethan Jones Parry, take up their positions yesterday. Their appointments will run until 31 August 2017.

The role of the advisory panel is to support the Welsh Language Commissioner in crucial work to promote the language. The panel informs the Commissioner in her work, provides an opportunity for her to discuss issues, and gives considered advice.

Carl Cooper, a Welsh learner, is the Chief Executive of the Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations. He has previously served on the Governing Body of the Church in Wales, Trinity College Council, BBC Audience Council for Wales and Children in Need Wales Committee.

Bethan Jones Parry is a freelance communications consultant, broadcaster and journalist, and is the Chair of the Wylfa Newydd Welsh Language Impact Assessment Group.

The First Minister said:

"The Welsh Language Commissioner has an important role to play in promoting people’s rights to use the Welsh language everyday and holding those who oppose this to account. This is no easy task and the purpose of the Advisory Panel is to provide valuable support and advice.

"I’m delighted that Carl Cooper and Bethan Jones Parry have agreed to become members of the Advisory Panel. I’m confident their wide range of skills and experience will help support the Commissioner in her work."
