Arts Council England confirms Alan Davey, current Chief Executive, has been appointed Controller of BBC Radio 3

Alan Davey, Chief Executive Arts Council England recently (26 September 2014) said:

'I am feeling really conflicting emotions today. When I was approached about applying to be Controller of Radio 3 I knew that it would be the only job I could conceive of leaving the Arts Council for. Well, I eventually said yes to applying, and now I can confirm that I have got the job.

As well as feeling excited (and a little dazed) I really am feeling sad at the same time. You’ve been a wonderful bunch of people to work with; the things we do in our sector are amazing and change peoples' lives.

My time at the Arts Council has been brilliant, not least because it has been such a privilege to work with an endlessly creative sector, as well with people here at the Arts Council itself.

I have encountered some amazing things we've helped bring about, from 30 foot high Lions to Stockhausen with Camels, with much in between including great ground-breaking things like Unlimited and taking on the Music Hubs, things that spread opportunity and make sure talent has the chance to thrive.

I am more passionate than ever about the power that arts and culture has to transform lives and why it is so important that each and every one of us has the opportunity to experience that for ourselves. We've done some brilliant things and there is more to do. And I know that all your skills and enthusiasm will make sure we do those things.

In spreading serious music and ideas at Radio 3 I will carry with me the flame and the passion of how we do things - spotting opportunities, knowing a great deal about the art and loving it, and never being afraid to try something new.

I will remain at the Arts Council for three more months and will be as committed and enthusiastic as ever to the role in that time.'

Sir Peter Bazalgette, Chair Arts Council England said:

'Alan Davey has indeed succeeded in being appointed to run BBC Radio 3.

Not least, we are losing an exceptionally able leader and someone we have loved working with. I’m sorry Alan is leaving us, but I have to congratulate him on his brilliant new job.

Alan leaves a great legacy for the Arts Council –a brilliant team, strong leadership from the Executive Board and a clear roadmap in Achieving great art and culture for everyone

It’s too early to speculate on who might be appointed to replace Alan – but their task is clear – to build on that legacy and maintain the high regard that I believe the Arts Council now enjoys. I’m pleased Alan will continue with us for the three months of his notice period. We will begin the search for a new Chief Executive straight away.

I’m confident we will all be able to get on with the big tasks we face in the coming year. We must continue to support the arts and culture sector. And we must focus on making the case to a new government for the value of culture.

There will be moments for all of us to thank Alan and reflect on his achievements before he leaves us but let me take this opportunity to be the first. Radio 3 is indeed lucky to get him.'

The timeline for appointing a new Chief Executive will be announced in due course.
