BCS introduces RITTech - A new standard for IT Technicians

There’s a new way for ambitious IT Technicians to stand out from the crowd and help boost their careers. BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT has launched the Register for IT Technicians (RITTech) - a UK standard to recognise and represent technical staff.

The register provides a recognised benchmark of competence and enables employers to distinguish, recruit and retain professionals with the right capabilities and the right attitude - the kind of people who ‘bring more’ to their work. Registrants are able to demonstrate their professionalism, skills and knowledge against their chosen core technical area. There is a public register to enable employers to check that IT Technicians applying for roles have obtained RITTech status.

Chi Onwurah, Shadow Minister for Business, Innovation and Skills, says: “As a Chartered Engineer myself I know the advantage that professional registration brings to the sector, helping employers to distinguish, recruit and retain people with the right capabilities, boosting the status of the profession and helping the UK to compete in a global market place.”

Jos Creese, President, BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, explains: “Up until now there has been no widely accepted industry standard for IT Technicians, yet business dependence on technology has made these roles more critical than ever. BCS is addressing this by launching the Register for IT Technicians. Not everyone will be eligible. Registrants must demonstrate a certain level of professional competence. By doing so, they can showcase the skills, knowledge and other attributes that add real value to their organisation.”

Lord Sainsbury, settlor of The Gatsby Charitable Foundation, which has provided BCS with support to establish the new Register for IT Technicians, says: “Technicians in the science, engineering and IT industries have a vital role to play in the UK’s economic growth, and if we are going to increase the number, which we urgently need to do, it is important that we have a national system of qualifications which everyone understands and which works in the marketplace. I am delighted, therefore, that BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, is taking a leadership role in launching a registration system for IT technicians, RITTech, which will join its sister registration schemes - RSciTech and EngTech - for science and engineering technicians.”

Candidates register via an online assessment and are verified by somebody who knows their work well, often this is a line manager. It gives businesses a real opportunity to recognise their staff and the capabilities within the workplace.
