The Minister for Natural Resources, Carl Sargeant has yesterday welcomed a report looking at how a pioneering Welsh Government Bill can best set the platform for a Wales fit for future generations.

'The Wales We Want' report follows a conversation with 7,000 people across Wales. People were asked what sort of Wales they want for their children and grandchildren, considering challenges and ways to solve long-term problems, with responses helping shape the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Bill.

The Minister said:

“We are the first country to attempt this kind of Bill and it’s vital that we get it right for the good of this and future generations in Wales.

“It’s fantastic to see that the report and the thousands of people who have been involved in this conversation are supportive both of the principles and the detail already in the Bill. It’s also pleasing to note the recommendations, which will inform further amendments to the Bill to strengthen it and ensure that it achieves its aim.

“To this end, adding a seventh goal, ‘A globally responsible Wales’, means that public bodies must take account of the contribution they are making to global well-being. This reinforces our position as global pioneers in terms of sustainable development, something which has already been acknowledged and commended by the UN.”

The report highlights the overwhelming message that children need to get the best start in life from very early years – better opportunities with the skills, education and knowledge needed to encourage an independent thinking next generation of 'Futures Leaders' and 'Community Champions.'

It tasks Public Service Boards with early interventions, through environmental and nutritional factors, to bring a positive impact on children's life chances, improving health, self-confidence and ambition.

The Wales We Want survey highlighted climate change as the single most important issue facing future generations, while the collation of overall responses in all forms of the Conversation made environment the main area of concern. Investment in growing local economies and creating new jobs is given high priority.

“The pilot National Conversation has been a journey that exceeded our expectations and an opportunity to look beyond the short-term pressures of everyday life and to discuss the nation we want to leave for future generations. Through the Conversation we have identified seven foundation values on which we can build a better future. The Conversation and the Report also emphasises that it is not simply government's responsibility to make it happen – we each have a part to play.”
