Blaenau Ffestinog’s Caban Bach improving family life

Caban Bach Family Centre in Blaenau Ffestiniog is making a real difference to the lives of families in the area, Communities and Tackling Poverty Minister Lesley Griffiths AM has said.

The Minister was visiting the centre, which is run by Barnardo’s Cymru, to see how support from the Welsh Government’s Families First and Flying Start programmes is helping to improve family life.

Families First has provided funding for Caban Bach to deliver services throughout Gwynedd  which support parents and families.  These services, provided bilingually through a consortium of local agencies, include parenting programmes, counselling for families, advocacy for children and young people, and support for young carers.

The Welsh Government’s Families First aims to reduce the number of families living in workless households, improve the skills of parents and carers in low-income households and reduce the inequalities in health, education and economic outcomes for children who come from lower income households.

The Minister said:

“Caban Bach is having a positive impact on family life in the area and I am pleased the Families First programme is supporting them to deliver these important services.

“It has been great to see the wonderful work which is taking place and it is clear projects such as this in Blaenau Ffestiniog are extremely valuable to local communities and provide vital support which can benefit so many people.

“Through our innovative Families First programme, we are continuing to develop effective and collaborative help for families in order to improve their outcomes and deliver better life chances as a result.”

Llinos Rowlands, Children’s Services Manager, Barnardo’s Cymru at  Caban Bach said:

“The funding we receive from the Families First programme enables us to support families through the challenges they face. Parents feel more able to cope and this gives children a better start in life.”
