Briefing Note - Improving Crime Statistics for England and Wales

Today the Office for National Statistics have released an update on a comprehensive 3 year programme to improve crime statistics for England and Wales.

To date the work has focused on developing new measures of fraud and cyber crime and the first estimates will be published in July 2016.

The work programme will also look at the methods used to estimate crimes experienced by victims with a high level of repeat victimisation. They have commissioned a review of the methods for estimating incidents of crime in the Crime Survey. Any future change would not affect existing estimates on the number of victims of crime which have shown significant reductions since the mid-1990s.
