British Transport Text Service 3rd Anniversary

Having reached its 3rd anniversary the British Transport Text Service has received more than 32,500 messages from UK rail users.

The service was designed to allow passengers to be able to report low level crime or non-emergency incidents to the BTP by texting 61016. This can be done 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which means the number is also monitored 24/7, allowing the capability to send a policing response if required. Texts have ranged from sexual offences, antisocial behaviour, drugs, trespass, drunk and disorderly behaviour, begging, smoking, violent behaviour, suspicious behaviour, cycle crime, criminal damage and theft.

Following its launch, BTP officers have responded to more than 5,000 incidents and recorded around 2,300 crimes.

The small ID sized cards can be found being handed out in railway stations as well as posters being placed in carriages and urge people to report anything they consider a threat or concern.
