Business Investment, Q3 2014 provisional results

Key points

  • The estimates in this release are short-term indicators of investment in assets (gross fixed capital formation (GFCF)). This release covers not only business investment, but asset and sector breakdowns of total GFCF, of which business investment is one component.
  • All investment data referred to in this bulletin are estimates of seasonally adjusted chained volume measures.
  • In Q3 2014, GFCF was estimated to have increased by £0.7 billion (1.0%) since the previous quarter, to £73.2 billion.
  • GFCF increased by 7.1% compared with the same quarter a year ago.
  • GFCF has increased for the last eight quarters, the longest sustained period of growth since 1998.
  • Most of the increase to GFCF in Q3 2014 came from increased investment in other buildings and structures. This increased by £0.9 billion (4.6%) since the previous quarter.
  • In Q3 2014, business investment was estimated at £44.6 billion. It is estimated to be £2.6 billion higher than its pre-downturn peak in Q2 2008.
  • Business investment decreased by an estimated £0.3 billion (-0.7%) compared with Q2 2014 however, it increased by 6.3% compared with the same quarter a year ago.
  • In Q3 2014, intellectual property products had the largest quarter on quarter decrease, decreasing by an estimated £0.6 billion (-3.6%).
