CBI Scotland has responded to Nicola Sturgeon’s speech on the final day of the Scottish National Party Conference 2016.

Hugh Aitken, CBI Scotland Director, said:

“Placing inclusive growth at the centre of the Scottish Government’s domestic agenda will be welcomed by businesses.

“In particular firms will be heartened by the First Minister’s focus on education and exports – both are key drivers of productivity that will help to increase Scotland’s prosperity and competitiveness. We look forward to working with the Scottish Government on the details of these proposals.

“The First Minister is right to highlight the importance of educational attainment and childcare as vital ingredients for the economy’s long-term health.

“Ultimately, a successful Scottish economy will depend on a supportive environment where businesses of all sizes can contribute through job creation, innovation and investment. This matters more now than ever before, particularly against the backdrop of the country’s challenging fiscal situation.

“As the hourglass counts down to an exit from the EU in spring 2019, Scottish businesses will rightly be looking for greater clarity on the fundamental issues of skills and barrier-free access to EU markets.

“The Scottish and UK governments need to work better together to ensure the best deal possible for Scottish business in the EU negotiations. This is of vital importance.

“A second Scottish Independence referendum is rightly a matter for the Scottish people and their elected representatives.”
