CBI - TFL Chief Operating Officer outlines road investment in the capital

Garrett Emmerson, Transport for London, Chief Operating Officer - Surface Transport, recently briefed CBI members on plans for London's road network and how it will impact businesses.

The CBI/ KPMG London Business survey highlighted last year that almost half (49%) of London businesses say that the capital’s roads are deteriorating and when looking ahead at key transport infrastructure needed to ensure London retains its internal and external connectivity, improvements to roads are cited as a priority.

This is why CBI London was pleased to host a private roundtable discussion with members and Garrett Emmerson, Chief Operating Officer – surface transport at Transport for London (TfL).

TfL outlined the capital’s £4bn Road Modernisation Plan which will deliver a programme of major highway improvements, improvements for cyclists and keep London moving by tackling congestion.

A number of schemes will begin construction this year. This includes several Cycle Superhighways, improvements to junctions e.g. Elephant and Castle Better Junction scheme, restoring existing infrastructure such as the Hammersmith Flyover and Chiswick Bridge, as well as upgrading traffic signals.

TfL are keen to ensure that there is minimal disruption to everyday activities and is aiming to take a ‘games-style’ approach to communicating during construction. Detailed maps are being produced for each scheme and leaflets and advertising material will be launched.
