CBI comments on Secretary of State for Energy's speech

The CBI commented on a speech on energy policy, given by the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Amber Rudd.

Rhian Kelly, CBI Business Environment Director, said:

“With recent changes in energy policy, it’s vital the Government gives investors clarity on the direction of travel. The Secretary of State’s announcement is an encouraging sign that the Government is looking at ways to bolster our long-term energy future.

“As we move away from relying on coal for our energy supply, it’s important the right signals are in place for investors to build new gas-fired power stations - at present, they are hard to find.

“A smooth transition from coal to gas is critical, so we must ensure we have new capacity before we take coal out of the energy mix. Getting this right should deliver a successful energy policy that works for consumers, businesses and investors.”

The recently published 2015 CBI/AECOM Infrastructure Survey showed:

  • With nearly three quarters (74%) of firms saying energy security is crucial, almost all businesses (97%) see investment in a diverse and secure energy mix as vital.
  • 90% of firms believe investment is put at risk by short-term changes to policy, reflecting recent uncertainty over the Government’s renewables policies.
  • 91% of firms see a role for Government in helping businesses to manage their energy costs, with 88% seeing simplification of the energy efficiency landscape a vital step.
