CELEBRATING A DECADE OF INNOVATION

Ten years ago TfL made a huge leap forward in passenger communication with the launch of iBus.

On 17 January 2006 the first 'talking buses' were trialled on route 149 from London Bridge to Edmonton. There were kitted out with the new system featuring on-board audio and visual announcements which made real-time travel information available to passengers for the first time.

The new technology made it possible to pinpoint exactly where a bus was on its route. This meant services could be more evenly spaced during their journeys and  waiting times displayed for the 'next bus' at countdown screens could be much more accurate.

iBus has improved passenger security by identifying precisely the location of any bus and enabled
the installation of modern radio networks across all routes. Passengers also spend less time waiting as the more detailed information on journey times as TfL can accurately monitor bus operator performance and improve reliability.
