Cardboard Citizens perform Cathy Come Home - 5th July at the Barbican

Blog posted by: Martin Reed, Friday, 24 June 2016.

For one night only - a stage performance of the milestone 1966 television play at the Barbican in July, performed by actors with direct experience of homelessness.

The controversy generated by Ken Loach’s television play in the late 60’s, Cathy Come Home, led to public outrage at the state of housing in Britain, and a huge amount of charitable action in relation to homelessness. It has since been named as the "most influential TV programme of all time" for raising public awareness of homelessness and leading to changes in government policy and attitudes.

50 years on, Cardboard Citizens has adapted Ken Loach’s pioneering work for the stage. If will be performed by Cardboard Citizens' own members, all of whom have directly experienced homelessness.

Following the performance Cardboard Citizens will host a panel discussion with leading figures from the worlds of homelessness and the arts chaired by Samira Ahmed, BBC broadcaster, to ask the question "Homelessness 50 years on – what’s changed?"
