Changing the learning landscape

Students, practitioners and university leaders from across 145 UK universities and colleges have taken part in a ground-breaking HEFCE-funded programme, led by the Leadership Foundation, to advance technology-enhanced student learning.

A summary report has been published, and a range of online resources to share innovative practice and support ongoing development has been launched.

The programme recognised that the student experience can be enhanced by technology in a number of ways, including:

  • the opportunity to gain additional digital skills and confidence
  • opportunities to collaborate and learn with other students remotely
  • improved interaction with lecturers
  • access to new and cutting-edge ‘live’ content
  • ultimately creating a more flexible, mobile, and personalised approach to their own learning.

The partnership (Note 1) engaged with those responsible for design and delivery of technology-enhanced learning strategies and projects within the participating universities and colleges, from students and practitioners to university leaders. The programme provided constructive challenges for local institutional aspirations in this area, and uncovered some key components for creating a sustainable environment for change.

The HEFCE Business Plan 2015-2020 commits to stimulating greater innovation in teaching and to better sharing of excellent and expert practice. This model of supporting strategic challenges nationally through funding a multi-agency partnership will be an important model for HEFCE in addressing future opportunities.

Previous work in this area

HEFCE’s support for the programme builds on ‘Enhancing learning and teaching through the use of technology: A revised approach to HEFCE's strategy for e-learning’, published by HEFCE in 2009. In previous years, HEFCE-funded programmes have focused on technological development and the accessibility of online resources. The Higher Education Academy and Jisc continue to work in this area.
