Chief Medical Officer goes back to school to talk healthcare careers

Ahead of her retirement this month, Wales’ Chief Medical Officer Dr Ruth Hussey met A-Level students at her old school, Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy, to talk about her career and to inspire them to consider a future in healthcare.

Dr Hussey, who attended the school between 1967 and 1974, met Year 13 pupils and some younger students interested in healthcare careers and answered their questions on her role, responsibilities and career at their Friday morning assembly.

She said:

“Growing up in a farming family in north Wales, attending the local school, I never dreamt that one day I would be the Chief Medical Officer for Wales.

“Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy gave me a great start in life, and part of coming back here is about saying thank you.

“The students I met in Llanrwst have great futures ahead of them, and I hope that some of them will consider a career in Welsh healthcare as it can offer a wide range of exciting career opportunities.

“Last year I joined a primary school class in Cardiff to encourage them to learn about what happens in healthcare as part of the Who’s in Health, Primary Futures campaign. I have also contributed to the Girls in Science campaign and met students from schools in north and south Wales to encourage young women into science subjects.

“I want to inspire as many as possible, and especially the enthusiastic students at Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy to see the relevance of what they are studying now to what they could become in the future. There are so many career opportunities in the NHS”

Elan Davies, Headteacher at Ysgol Dyffryn Conwy said:

“We were delighted that Dr Hussey was able to visit the school and talk to our pupils about her work and to inspire them for their futures. They were thrilled to have the opportunity to talk to Dr Hussey following her presentation about individual pathways in healthcare.”
