Winter campaign

This year NHS England, NHS Trust Development Authority, Monitor and Public Health England (PHE) are combining ‘Catch it, Kill it, Bin it’; ‘Keep Warm, Keep Well’; ‘Under the Weather’ and NHS 111 campaigns to create cohesive national messages in a single campaign. This will run on television, radio, outdoor and social media. It is important that local individual campaigns are not launched and run counter to the national campaign. National materials can be adapted for local use and will be available from October 2015 through NHS Comms Link and PHE’s campaign resource centre. Resources will include posters; leaflets; campaign designs and toolkits.

The Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) has issued guidance for community nurses about how to support homeless people to improve their oral health. Oral Health and Homelessness: Guidance for Community Nurses covers the specific oral health risks and needs of homeless people, including advice to re-connect patients with community dentists and practical advice for patients about looking after their teeth.

BAPEN introduces the Nutritional Care Tool

BAPEN has launched the Nutritional Care Tool which enables organisations to measure the nutritional care they provide, and robustly demonstrate both compliance to nutritional care related regulations and identify areas where improvements are required.  It provides a much needed, local improvement tool, which easily allows measurement of the quality of nutritional care provided.

Next steps in guidance for safe staffing

Plans for safe staffing guidance will be led by NHS Improvement, working with Jane Cummings, the Chief Nursing Officer for England. A letter describing plans, intended workstreams and oversight and calling for participation in this important programme of work, has been issued to Nursing Directors, CCGs, ALBs and other stakeholders. This follows on from a letter by the Chief Nursing Officer on 11 June 2015.

New urgent and emergency care vanguards

The NHS Five Year Forward View has announced eight vanguards to transform urgent and emergency care for nine million people. The vanguards will change the way organisations work together. This includes delivering care not just in hospitals but also via GPs, pharmacists, community teams, ambulance services, NHS 111, social care and others, and patients being supported to manage their own conditions. They will also break down boundaries between physical and mental health. The vanguards will benefit from a programme of support and investment from the £200m transformation fund.
