Children's Commissioner responds to the Prime Minister’s announcement on industrial strategy

Anne Longfield, Children’s Commissioner for England has responded to the Prime Minister’s announcement on industrial strategy.

Responding to the Prime Minister’s announcement on industrial strategy, Anne Longfield, Children’s Commissioner for England said:

"I welcome further investment into the Northern Powerhouse, and the Government’s pledge to improve skills in communities where further support is needed.

My Growing Up North project shows that a child’s educational outcomes and life chances are influenced heavily by where they grow up. A young person leaving school or college in London or the South-East is 57% more likely to go on to a top university compared with someone leaving school in the North, but the momentum of the Northern Powerhouse means we have an opportunity to close these attainment gaps once and for all. It is important that we provide local young people with the opportunities and skills they need to drive regional growth.”
