City of London Police Spearhead Global Cyber Alliance to Tackle High Level Cyber

GCA identifies top four risks to online businesses including phishing, DDoS attacks and risks from compromised websites.

A meeting on Wednesday 17 May saw the establishment of the Global Cyber Alliance, a not for profit organisation aimed at transatlantic information sharing and identifying cyber solutions that will help businesses protect themselves from emerging threats. Set up by the City of London Police, the New York County District Attorney and the Center for Internet Security, the Alliance will initiate a set of measures that will protect the world’s two largest financial centres in light of the increasing threat to the financial sector from cyber-crime.

Having identified phishing attacks as a key danger to businesses, the GCA has encouraged the implementation of two innovative solutions that are known to have had a beneficial effect:

Domain Based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance (DMARC): DMARC is a mechanism that checks that incoming mail has been authorised by the body that it claims to have been sent from, filtering emails that have not been authorised.

Domain Name Service Response Policy Zones (DNS RPZ): An open source intelligence platform that collects and analyses cyber attacks, this tool collects, analyses and shares details of cyber attacks committed against GCA members.

Responding to the formation of the GCA, techUK’s Head of Programme for Cyber Security, Talal Rajab, said:

"Cyber-crime cannot be tackled in silos. The creation of the GCA is another clear example that global remedies are needed for the global problem of cyber-crime. Through the voluntary sharing of threat intelligence across borders and sectors, businesses can take enhanced preventative measures to ensure that they are cyber secure."
