A man wanted in connection with an alleged plot to smuggle around a tonne of cocaine on a yacht has been arrested by officers from the National Crime Agency.

The 29-year-old from Leeds handed himself in at a police station in the West Yorkshire area recently and was questioned yesterday (Monday 29 September).

He is the third person to be arrested in the UK in connection with the seizure of a yacht carrying cocaine with a UK street value of at least £100 million off the coast of Ireland on Tuesday 23 September.

Stephen Powell, 47, of Netherfield Road, Guiseley was charged with conspiring to import class A drugs and appeared before Leeds Magistrates on Saturday where he was remanded in custody.

A 43-year-old man arrested by the NCA at an address in Leeds has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Three other UK men detained by An Garda Síochána on board the vessel, the Makayabella, have also been charged and appeared in court in Cork over the weekend.
