Cocaine yacht investigation update

NCA investigators charged Stephen Powell, aged 47, of Netherfield Road, Guiseley, Leeds, tonight with conspiracy to import cocaine. He was remanded in custody and appeared at Leeds Magistrates Court recently.

Powell was arrested on the 25th September following the seizure of around a tonne of cocaine on board the yacht Makayabella earlier this week.

The three men detained on board the yacht were also charged tonight by the Garda with possessing cocaine with intent to import.

John Powell, aged 70, of Airedale Mews, Silsden, West Yorkshire; Benjamin, Mellor, aged 35, of Mornington Villas, Bradford; and Thomas Britteon, aged 28, of Convamore Road, Grimsby, appeared at a special sitting of Cork District Court. They were remanded in custody and will appear by video link at the same court next Thursday.
