Come and welcome Team Wales home!

The First Minister is urging the public to come and join the celebrations and give Team Wales the hero's welcome they deserve at a special Commonwealth Games homecoming event next week.

A public reception, jointly hosted by First Minister Carwyn Jones and Presiding Officer Dame Rosemary Butler AM, will be held for the Team from 5pm on Wednesday 10th September at the Senedd, Cardiff Bay.

Many prominent members of Team Wales will be at the event, including gymnast Frankie Jones, who scooped six medals and the David Dixon award, Natalie Powell who won the 78kg judo gold and Elena Allen who took silver in the women’s skeet shooting.

The First Minister said: “Team Wales has done Wales extremely proud. Their determination and drive has truly paid off, with the Team smashing their ambitious medal target despite some early set-backs.

“The Commonwealth Games are a special opportunity for Welsh athletes to compete against the world’s best under the Welsh flag, and I know that the competitors who represented their country at these wonderful Games consider it a huge honour.

“Team Wales’ performance in Glasgow will no doubt have a lasting legacy, inspiring the next generation of Welsh sporting greats. The event next week will be an opportunity for us all to celebrate their record success and show Team Wales how proud we are of them!”

The Presiding Officer said:

“Team Wales performed exceptionally well at the Glasgow Commonwealth games, exceeding the medal target by a wide margin.

“Sport Wales set tough targets for these games and our athletes rose to the challenge, achieving Team Wales’s best ever performance at the Commonwealth Games with a haul of 36 medals.

“They have done Wales proud and it is only right therefore that we welcome them back with a fanfare on the steps of the Senedd so that the Welsh public can join them in celebrating their success.”

Ahead of the competitors’ parade, there will be entertainment from great young Welsh talent, including Bone Appétit, a trombone quartet from the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, five piece girl band Baby Queens, and 17 year old soloist Kizzy Crawford. The celebration will be compered by broadcaster Jason Mohammad.
