Commission responds to call for reform of stop and search

Commenting in response to the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northamptonshire calling for stop and search powers to be reformed, and announcing a new review of stop and search in Northamptonshire, a Commission spokesperson, said:

“The effective and lawful use of stop and search powers is an important area the police need to get right, so we welcome this new review of how they are used in Northamptonshire.

“Concerted efforts by the Commission and the police service have resulted in some valuable improvements but further reform is needed. This would help improve relations between the police and the communities they serve and increase public confidence in the police.

“We are pleased to be working with the College of Policing to develop a new stop and search training programme for officers. It will be piloted in the autumn and will focus on reducing unconscious bias and discrimination, particularly against young black and Asian men.”
