Committee Meets Eminent Scientists at Queen’s University

The Assembly’s Health Committee held its meeting yesterday morning at the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology at Queen’s University, Belfast.

During its meeting the Committee was briefed on the innovative work being carried out by the Centre for Experimental Medicine, the Centre for Public Health and the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology. The Committee had the opportunity to meet with experts in each of these areas and view, at first hand, the ground breaking work being carried out.

Committee Chairperson Paula Bradley MLA said yesterday: “We were delighted to meet with some of Queen’s eminent scientists today, who are achieving international recognition for their pioneering work and delivering tangible health benefits for people here and elsewhere.

“For example, the Centre for Public Health and the Centre for Experimental Medicine focus their research on maximising health, preventing and managing chronic disease and disability and improving the delivery of health and social care. As our society ages, and budgets tighten, finding innovative solutions becomes even more pressing and we rely on centres of excellence to provide solutions for the future.

“We all know that cancer is one of the biggest killers in Northern Ireland. Everyone working in the health field acknowledges that improving our detection and survival rates is crucial and the Centre for Cancer Research is at the forefront of designing better, more personalised, care which can improve the lives of, and outcomes for, patients.

“This visit has given the Committee much to think about in terms of the way that we can help to integrate important research with practical solutions on the ground. As we go forward with our advice and scrutiny of the Department and its policies, we will be coming back to all of the issues raised today by these outstanding researchers.”
