The Northern Ireland Assembly Committee for Employment and Learning has yesterday hosted a seminar on opportunities in farming for people with learning disabilities.

The Committee observed the concept, called 'Social Farming' put into practice on a local farm, as part of its Inquiry into Post Special Educational Need (SEN) Provision in Education, Employment and Training for those with Learning Disabilities.

Chairperson of the Committee, Robin Swann MLA said: "The Committee has been looking at post SEN provision for a number of months now and, as part of our investigation, we looked at innovative programmes that can provide real training and opportunities for people with learning difficulties, whatever their ages.

"We recently saw this concept in action on a farm in Fermanagh and we were impressed at the results that this programme achieves. Not only does it provide training, it also can transform lives and help participants to be involved in meaningful activities. Listening to the stories of the people involved and the groups which are facilitating this concept, I am convinced that these schemes have a lot to offer.

"If we are to be serious about providing opportunities for all our people, whatever their disability and age, it is imperative that we encourage all the statutory and community based agencies to work together and design and implement innovative programmes."
