Response to Audit Scotland report into Glasgow 2014

Responding to the Audit Scotland report, Jamie Hepburn, Minister for Sport, Health Improvement and Mental Health, said:

“I welcome this report from Audit Scotland which shows that Glasgow 2014, as well as being a huge sporting success, was also exceptionally well run and well managed. Working with partners including the organising committee and Glasgow City Council, it was always a high priority of the Scottish Government that the Games would be delivered within budget. I am pleased to see that has been achieved.

“The success of the Games would not have been possible without a huge amount of work from many dedicated people behind the scenes, and I would like to thank them all for their efforts.

“Given that it’s Legacy Week, I welcome the fact that legacy has been highlighted in the report as something that was given a high priority right from the beginning of the planning process. It was crucial to us, and all of our partners, that the Games brought benefits that lasted long after the closing ceremony. As well as the excellent sporting facilities and venues, we have seen community facilities, infrastructure benefits and scores of projects right around Scotland. I also hope that in time we will see that the Games has attracted more people to sport and physical activity, bringing about a permanent improvement in Scotland’s health.

“While the Games may be over, legacy remains a long term commitment and we are only half-way through Scotland’s 10-year Legacy Plan. The Scottish Government remains firmly committed to working with our partners in the years ahead, to continue and enhance a strong, Scotland-wide, legacy.”
