Competition lawyer secondment opportunities at the CMA

The CMA is looking for competition lawyers who would be interested in a secondment lasting between 3 and 12 months.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the UK’s lead competition and consumer authority.

There are a number of benefits of taking part in a secondment, including:

  • invaluable experience and an in-depth understanding of how the CMA operates, its new and evolving investigative and governance procedures and its evolving work programme
  • an unparalleled experience that will add significantly to a portfolio of skills

Secondees will be offered the opportunity to take part in a range of interesting and high-profile work including Competition Act (CA98) cases, Enterprise Act cases and mergers under the supervision of some leading competition practitioners.

The secondments are for qualified lawyers with 2 or more years’ experience. For these positions some previous experience in the areas outlined above is highly desirable, but not essential if the lawyer in question has an aptitude and passion for competition law. Some training can be provided in the role, so we may be able to offer a role to exceptional candidates with limited competition law experience.

The earliest secondment opportunities will start as soon as practicable in 2015 (other secondments may be available later in the year) and the minimum period of time the CMA will consider the placements is for 3 months, the maximum being 12 months.

The CMA will contribute to the cost of secondees at a rate in line with the CMA salary for the role.

Chambers and firms that would like to put staff forward to be considered for these one-off secondment opportunities should send a full CV for each candidate, by Friday 3 April 2015, to Simon Nichols (Simon.Nichols@cma.gsi.gov.uk). Please note we will not accept any applications from agencies.

Please also inform us when each candidate could start a secondment and how long they could spend with us.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss the benefit of allowing members of your staff to take up these opportunities, please call Debbie Hoskins on 020 3738 6555.
