Computing Curriculum Tool Kit Launched for School Leaders

Head teachers need to take an active part in ensuring that their school offers a great computing curriculum - according to BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT.

To help achieve this, a specially developed tool kit is being sent to all secondary schools in England next week to support school leaders in implementing a high quality computing curriculum for all their students. Produced by BCS and Computing At School (CAS) with support from a Microsoft YouthSpark grant, the tool kit includes practical advice, guidance, case studies and action plans to assist teachers and their senior leadership teams.

Bill Mitchell, Director of Education at BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT explains: “The new computing curriculum provides real possibilities for the life chances of young people and with effective leadership in schools we will see those possibilities come to fruition. The support of school leadership teams is crucial if computing is to succeed in schools. The new tool kit we have helped develop identifies the key issues that school leadership teams need to address in their strategic leadership role and draws on real examples of what has worked.”

The tool kit includes short, easy to read leaflets covering key questions around leadership, curriculum, teaching and resourcing, to help school leaders identify the next steps to ensure a great computing education for their students.

Ian Fordham, Director of Education from Microsoft adds: “Computing and digital skills are critical for the future of UK education system and for giving every educator and student access to an increasingly connected society. Schools have made huge progress since Computing became part of the curriculum, but there’s a lot more to do to embed it across the life of the school and into the DNA of leadership and these materials will play a key role in making that happen.”
