Contactless collection tins for London charities

Customers using public transport in the Capital can now donate to charity as they travel.

Called 'Penny for London', the scheme allows people to register their contactless debit or credit card and give one penny - or more if they wish - every day they travel on the Tube, buses, trams, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground, and most National Rail services that accept Oyster.

It was unveiled last week by Mayor Boris Johnson who described it as'a big, bold idea that will revolutionise the way we give to charity'.

He added: 'The latest contactless technology is going to help transform the lives of thousands of young people across the Capital. Enabling people travelling around the city to pool their pennies could potentially add up to hundreds of thousands of pounds. And the best thing about itis just how simple it is. Just sign up and touch in!'

The initiative was devised by theMayor's Fund for London and is powered by Barclaycard.Contactless cardholders can opt-in at www.pennyforlondon.com and follow @Pennyforlondon on Twitter. The official Twitter hashtag is #Easy1Peasy.
