Figures published by the Welsh Government recently show that there was an increase in the number of people enjoying day trips to Wales from June 2015 to May 2016 with a significant rise in the money spent by these visitors while in Wales.

84 million tourism day visits were made by British residents to Wales, and these visitors spent £3,168 million. The volume of trips is up 5.5 %in comparison with the 12 months previous, while related expenditure is up 23.8%.  Average spend per day trip in Wales is higher than in GB as a whole. 

GB visitors staying overnight in Wales are also on the increase. In the 12 months April 2015-March 2016, the number of trips to Wales increased by 1.6 % in comparison with the 12 months April 2014-March 2015. 

Expenditure by these visitors also continues to increase and rose 7.4% in the 12 months ending in March 2016.

Cabinet Secretary for he Economy and Infrastructure, Ken Skates, said: 

“It’s great news that the number of people spending a day in Wales has seen an increase, especially as these figures will take account of the Easter season, it’s also encouraging to see that people are spending much more while on trips to Wales than they did last year.  This shows that we are giving people compelling reasons to Visit Wales – be that to enjoy our activities and landscape during our Year of Adventure or visiting our wealth of attractions. 

“Not only are our national team exceeding expectations and making history at Euro 2016, along with the fans they are the best possible ambassadors for Wales. I'm sure this success and profile will result in a renewed interest in Wales for the coming year.”
