Cumbria Constabulary custody sergeant faces common assault charge

A Cumbria Constabulary custody sergeant has been summonsed to face a charge of common assault by beating (contrary to s39 of the Criminal Justice Act 1988) following an Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation.

The charge arises out of an alleged incident that is said to have taken place involving the officer, PS Andrew Rogers, and a 38-year-old man in the custody suite at Workington Police Station on 23 May 2015.

The IPCC independently investigated the incident and provided a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service. The CPS gave the authority for the officer to be summonsed.

PS Rogers will appear at Preston Magistrates' Court on 10 December 2015.
