DCMS Launches HutZero: a Cyber Start-up Incubator for Non-Cyber Entrepreneurs

Government Backed Incubator Seeks to Attract Newcomers to Cyber-Security.

HutZero, a six-month programme funded by the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) as part of the National Cyber Security Programme, was launched this month looking to support people who are looking to set up their own innovative cyber security businesses.

The ‘early stage accelerator programme’ will be jointly run by Cyber London(CyLon) and the Centre for Secure Information Technologies (CSIT – based atQueen’s University Belfast), and will equip up to twenty new entrepreneurs, provide expert advice, and help them find potential co-founders.

Created for people who have innovative ideas but limited technical expertise, the two-part course includes a weeklong ‘boot camp’; followed by three months of mentoring and a progress-tracking ‘follow up’ event to allow participants to share their work and ideas; concluding with a ‘demo day’ that will be attended by prospective investors and partners. The ‘boot camp’ is designed to cover a balanced subject field, including technical
development and business fundamentals, delivered by experts from cyber and commercial backgrounds across academia and both public and private sectors.

Uniquely, the initiative has offered to cover the accommodation and travel costs for every attendee at the London ‘boot camp’ that runs from 12-16 September. (As the UK’s only cybersecurity incubator, CyLon’s own three-month accelerator programme offers similar assistance in the form of free workspace and is currently working with its third intake of companies.)
