DSRL encourage innovative solutions

At its annual supply chain event, Dounreay Site Restoration Limited told companies that they want to work with them to develop innovative solutions for a range of challenging projects.

Attendees listened to DSRL Managing Director Mark Rouse outline some of Dounreay’s major projects. Many of the projects include work to retrieve, treat and store Dounreay’s historic waste.

This year’s supply chain event, held in Thurso, attracted 77 companies.

Decommissioning projects include ones to:
 - retrieve historic higher activity waste from the shaft and silo
 - repackage waste for safe long term storage

DSRL expect costs in the region of £60m for:
 - the shaft and silo headworks
 - the higher activity waste store extension for the cementation plant
 - the second phase of the low level waste vaults

Mark emphasised the importance of finding innovative solutions to decommissioning challenges.

“Dounreay has a long history of finding ways to use technology from other industries to help it clean up the site” he said.

“Innovation helps us to save money and work smarter.”

Nigel Lowe, NDA Head of Programme at Dounreay said:

“I am very pleased with the joint work by DSRL and NDA. Socio-economic requirements are now built into terms and conditions of the Dounreay contracts.  Furthermore, we are sharing this knowledge cross the NDA estate, which is a credit to all involved.”
