Deputy Minister visits Llandudno to meet hotel staff of the future

Deputy Minster for Skills and Technology, Julie James, will visit Llandudno’s Empire Hotel today to meet young people considering a career in the hospitality industry.

Pupils from Ysgol John Bright, Llandudno, are spending the day learning about the range of job opportunities available in a hotel. They’ll receive an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the premises, spend time with employees and try their hands at a range of activities. Empire Hotel owner Elyse Waddy will also be on-hand to advise on the type of skills required for a career in tourism.

The Deputy Minister will meet pupils during the busy lunchtime period at the hotel’s Watkins restaurant.

Julie James said:

“Tourism is one of our most important industries, directly and indirectly supporting 14.9% of jobs in Wales and contributing £8.7 billion to the economy. It is the number one industry in some rural communities, sustaining the local economy and culture.

“I’m delighted that a hotel like the Empire has taken the time to open its doors to young people and give them a taster of what the sector offers.

“Opportunities like this are invaluable when a young person is considering their future and can open up doors to them

“We’re committed to supporting young people into the workplace with Welsh Government schemes such as Jobs Growth Wales and apprenticeship programmes. These help thousands of young people every year.”

Empire Hotel owner Elyse Waddy said:

"It is vital we promote the many positive opportunities that the hospitality industry offers young people on their doorstep and dispel any myths that may exist in their view of our businesses.

“Well paid management and restaurant opportunities exist in our global industry for those who are willing to work and can add their positive contribution to a busy team in successful businesses that employ thousands across Wales.”

Today’s event was organised by the British Hospitality Association Cymru, the representative body for Hotels and Restaurants in Wales, as part of Wales Tourism Week.
