Digitisation key to efficient European transport system

The European Parliament Committee on Transport and Tourism focus on the opportunity of digitising and harmonising the European transport sector.

In a draft opinion in response to the communication on "A Digital Single Market Strategy for Europe", the European Parliament Committee on Transport and Tourism have emphasised digitisation as key to making the European transport system more efficient and productive.

The Committee noted that the digitisation of the transport sector will provide Europe with new business opportunities and jobs, highlighting strong global growth in Intelligent Transport Systems and the range of opportunities for the sector though the implementation of IoT.

As a result, the Committee have urged the Commission to modernise EU regulations and adapt them to the digital age. Through the harmonisation of different transport modes the Committee sees the opportunity for greater competition and new innovations and services for mobility and logistics.

The Committee also emphasised the importance of confidence and solid data protection. In this context, they have stressed the need to ensure high standards as regards to data capacity, accessibility and security, through the provision of a comprehensive, reliable and interoperable data infrastructure and by ensuring the security and credibility of data collection, processing, usage and storage.

The suggestions from the Committee on Transport and Tourism were made to the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection.
