Double depot treat for transport enthusiasts

There's a fun outing in store for families later this month as London Transport Museum welcomes the public to an open weekend at its museum depot in Acton.

But that's not all. There's also the opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at the Siemens Heathrow Express depot, just down the road.

The weekend is part of the museum's 'Design Uncovered' event on 26 and 27 September, which celebrates London's famous public transport designs and brands. People will be able to enjoy a host of design-themed activities at both depots, including seeing the original 1916 printing blocks used to create the famous London Transport typeface.

They can also discover more about London Underground's iconic logo. There will be talks and displays on vehicle and upholstery design and creative workshops are being held. At the Siemens Heathrow Express depot, enthusiasts will find a train up on jacks that they will be able to walk underneath to see how it's maintained. They'll also be able to handle some genuine train parts and discover how they work.

This tour is available on Saturday only. A free shuttle bus will run between the two Acton depots.

Admission for the Open weekend is free for children under 18 and £10 for adults. It includes the visit to the Siemens Heathrow Express Depot on Saturday. Visitors can also buy a London by Design pass for £20 that gives them entry to the Acton depot event, plus two daytime visits to the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. It is valid from 11 September until 23 November 2015.
