Second round of closures to go ahead on the A90 this weekend

The public have been commended for taking heed of travel advice that led to a smooth closure of the A90 over the weekend, however Transport bosses are again warning motorists to avoid the Forth Road Bridge area this weekend.

Motorists are again urged to avoid the Forth Road Bridge area this coming weekend as essential demolition works are scheduled for October 31 and November 1, 2015.

From 8 PM on Saturday October 31 the A90 and M90 (M9 Spur) will be closed in both directions through to a latest re-opening time of 6 AM on the Monday morning.

Steven Brown, Transport Scotland, Roads and Infrastructure Manager said:

“I would like to thank the public for taking on board our advice to plan their journey and stay clear of the area. While the local roads in Kirkliston and Queensferry were busier than normal last weekend, the possibility of significant delays did not materialise as a result of the works, this is because the public took our advice and followed the diversion route.

“We urge everyone not to be complacent – our message ahead of this weekend remains the same - please plan ahead and avoid the Forth Road Bridge area.

“The demolition work and 15 additional operations on the closed network went according to plan and the A90 reopened as scheduled on Monday morning. Other trunk road operating companies took advantage of the closure to carry out works which would be disruptive if undertaken on a different date.

“During the closure, the FRB will remain open for local access only. The Forth Bridges Operating Company (Amey) are again taking the opportunity to undertake some regular and necessary maintenance work on the FRB. A single lane contraflow will again be in place on the bridge for the duration of the A90 closure.

“We will continue to provide regular updates to the media, VMS signs on the network have been advising drivers about the closures and we are working closely with our colleagues in Traffic Scotland to best ensure everyone is able to make an informed journey decision during the closure.”

Diversion routes to cross the Forth for A90 traffic travelling south and north will be via the M9 (A904/5 for non-motorway traffic), Kincardine Bridge and the A985 to Rosyth and further afield.

Diversion routes for traffic travelling north from Edinburgh will be via the M8 and M9 to Kincardine Bridge.

The road closure will be in place between Echline Junction, south of the Forth Road Bridge and north of Barnton at the B924 Dalmeny junction on the A90. In addition, the M90 (M9 Spur) will also be closed in both directions between M9 Junction 1A and the A90 Scotstoun Junction at Queensferry. The B800 and B924 will remain open for local access only.

Public transport options are limited given buses will be impacted by road disruption, however trains will still be running with some trains having additional coaches.

Road users are encouraged to avoid the FRB area, plan their journey and make use of the live traffic updates available from Traffic Scotland and utilise public transport if appropriate.
