EU Council plans not to review 'overall coherence' of data protection regulation

The EU Council has decided not to hold a dedicated session on the 'overall coherence' on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

techUK has been made aware that the EU Council has decided not to hold a dedicated session on the 'overall coherence' of its current text on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Instead the Council meetings will continue on an issue by issue basis. techUK is concerned about this and believes this is a missed opportunity for EU Member States to ensure that its proposals are coherent and workable and that they meet the needs of European citizens and businesses.

The GDPR is an extraordinarily complex piece of legislation. Its effectiveness cannot be properly assessed without a careful assessment of how all the various articles work together in practice. Europe needs a workable regulation that will ensure that consumers are clear about their rights and businesses have a clear and consistent legal framework that gives them the clarity and confidence to invest and grow their businesses.

The GDPR is fundamental to the success of the proposed Digital Single Market which offers a unique opportunity to create the next wave of jobs and growth for Europe. techUK believes the Council should host a dedicated session to ensure the proposed new data protection rules are coherent, workable and clear to both businesses and citizens before the scheduled JHA council meeting on 15 June 2015.
