Elite cyclists to tour a new London route

The route for this year's Friends Life Tour of Britain cycling race has been unveiled complete with a new and improved final stage in London, set to be the event's toughest yet.

We will present the route for the London stage, starting and finishing on Regent Street, on Sunday 13 September.

Elite riders will race along the 93km route, taking in the sights of Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, the Strand and Whitehall, and giving spectators a number of great viewing spots to enjoy the action.

Commenting on the route for the London Stage, our Director of Surface Strategy and Planning Ben Plowden said: 'It's fantastic to be able to welcome back Britain's biggest professional cycle race to the streets of London.

'With a revamped route touching new areas of the city, I've no doubt that this year's race will inspire a new breed of cyclists, who will soon be able to make use of our new and upgraded cycling infrastructure including the segregated Cycle Superhighways.'

The tour, which is the UK's largest free spectator sporting event, is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Capital.

As well as the new London route, other firsts for this year's event include a Grand Depart in Wales, a stage start in Edinburgh and two stages taking in Northumberland and the north east of England.

There will be eight stages in total between Sunday 6 and Sunday 13 September.
