Enjoy London on a budget

THE Capital can sometimes be an expensive city, but this September there's a huge variety of fun, free events to enjoy, from boat races on the Thames to outdoor film screenings.

The easiest and cheapest way to get around is with Oyster or a contactless payment card. You can get an Oyster card from any London Underground or Overground station for a £5 returnable deposit. If you're a student or part of a young family, ask about the Zip Oyster cards that allow children and some students to travel for free, or at a discounted rate. Now it's time to explore!

Totally Thames

The Totally Thames festival runs throughout the whole of September. With more than 100 events, most of which are free, you'll be sure to find something that floats your boat. Perhaps you'd like to journey back in time with the rare London maps exhibition at gallery@oxo, or by joining an archeological walk?

There are boutique festivals for different kinds of ships and boats, with The Great River Race taking place on Saturday September 27. Up to 300 crews from around the world will be battling it out for a win, and you can watch the race at various sections along the Thames. Head to the riverside between Richmond and Ham House for around 15:40 to join the excitement of the finish line. Visit www.totallythames.org for the full schedule and dates.

Historic London

If you're new to the city and want to do some sightseeing, you don't need to splash out on expensive tour bus tickets. Use your Oyster card on River Bus services for some great viewing along the river. On land, another option is the number 11 bus. This budget version will take you past many of the city's most popular tourist attractions, including Westminster Abbey, The Royal Courts Of Justice and St Paul's Cathedral.

It's also a chance to take a ride on one of the beautifully designed New Routemasters, which operate along the route. Buses are now cashless in London, so make sure you have your contactless card to hand or a topped up Oyster card.

Two-wheeled adventures

If you're pro pedal power, Barclays Cycle Hire is an inexpensive way to explore at your own pace, costing just £2 for a 24-hour access period. Leisure routes include secret gardens and Saturday markets. Visittfl.gov.uk/leisureroutes for maps and directions.

Open air cinema

For film-lovers, there are free screenings at The Scoop, the outdoor amphitheatre space next to City Hall. There's something to suit all tastes, including cult classics The Goonies and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Just head to www.morelondon.com for the full schedule.

Museums and galleries

Taking the London Overground is a great way to enjoy arts and culture hopping - again, you can use your Oyster card. Be inspired by the beautiful historic interiors at the Geffrye Museum, a short walk from Hoxton station. Get back on the train and head to Whitechapel for contemporary and 20th century art at the Whitechapel Gallery - entry is free for both venues. If you're feeling more adventurous, you could walk instead, taking in vibrant Brick Lane on the way.
