European Commission to update the 2013 Cyber Security Strategy

It has been reported that the European Commission has begun work on updating its 2013 Cyber Security Strategy ‘An Open, Safe and Secure Cyberspace’.

Vice-President Ansip, Vice-President Mogherini, Commissioner Avramopoulos, and Commissioner King are developing proposals that are expected to ensure the current framework is fit for addressing emerging cyber threats and encourage greater information and best practise sharing among member states. It is also anticipated that the report will include analysis of future European Network Information Security Agency activities.

It has been suggested that the Commission may include new legislation on cyber security certifications for companies producing IoT products.

The new proposals are likely to be published in May 2017, and comes following concerns of cyber interference in the US Presidential Election, the proliferation of fake news and increased awareness of IT infrastructure hacking

The Commission’s work will be an important step in refocusing the 2013 Cyber Strategy to anticipate ever evolving cyber threats faced by states, corporations and individuals. techUK looks forward to the publication of the Commission’s proposals in the Spring.
