Exciting plans in store for Porth Teigr

The Porth Teigr area of Cardiff Bay could soon be home to street food, a pop up market, live outdoor events, offices and hotel apartments thanks to a proposed shipping container development aimed at rejuvenating the area.

The Welsh Government has given its initial approval to lease a 0.64 acre part of the Porth Teigr site to Box City, the developers behind Cardiff’s Tramshed.

The site already boasts BBC Wales’ Roath Lock studios, the Gloworks and the Dr Who Experience and has a growing reputation as a Creative Industries hub.

However, these latest proposals could see the site becoming home to the first storage container development of its kind in the UK and could significantly raise both its profile and visitor numbers.

Economy Secretary Ken Skates said:

“These are really exciting proposals that have the potential to completely transform what is currently a derelict and disused site in the Porth Teigr area of Cardiff Bay.

“If these plans come to pass they could see Wales becoming the first country in the UK  to host a storage container development of this kind -which would be quite a coup in itself – and could bring a host of exciting leisure and business opportunities to this growing area of Cardiff Bay.

“I am pleased the Welsh Government has been able to give its initial  approval to lease this site to Box City and look forward to this exciting proposal progressing further. “

Simon Baston , Director of DS Properties, the company behind the ground breaking Tramsheds said:

“DS Properties are delighted to be working alongside the Welsh Government once again to  provide the most innovative spaces for  the burgeoning creative,  tech and media industries now operating in South Wales.

“ I believe that Cardiff has all the right social and commercial elements in place to rival any city in the UK in terms of SME support."

The proposed development would be constructed wholly from shipping containers and would house retail units, offices and hotel apartment accommodation.

There are also plans for a street food, pop up market, external seating areas and an outdoor stage and screen to host events.

The development would be targeted at SME’s with units let on flexible tenancy agreements for a maximum term of 10 years.

The Welsh Government has now agreed provisional lease terms with Box City and the new development could be up and running as early as next Spring.
